THE RESURRECTION IS HISTORICAL

If the resurrection of Jesus did not happen, Christianity collapses. But if it did happen, everything changes. The resurrection is not merely a spiritual symbol. It is a historical claim that invites examination.

Christian faith does not begin with a moral code. It begins with an event.

The Early Proclamation Was Immediate

One of the strongest historical facts is this

The resurrection was proclaimed immediately after the crucifixion.

This was not a legend that developed over the centuries. Within weeks, the disciples were publicly declaring in Jerusalem that Jesus had risen.

Scholars recognize that early creeds about the resurrection date back to within a few years of the crucifixion. That is too early for myth formation.

If the resurrection were fabricated, it would have required time to evolve. Instead, it appears at the very foundation of Christian proclamation.

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins… that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day… and that he appeared…” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–5

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins… that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day… and that he appeared…” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–5

The Empty Tomb Is Widely Acknowledged

“Joseph took the body and laid it in his own new tomb.” — Matthew 27:59–60

Even critical scholars admit the tomb was empty. Why?

Because the burial site was known, Jesus was buried in a specific tomb. If his body remained there, authorities could have easily ended the movement by producing it.

They never did.

Additionally, the earliest accounts record that women discovered the empty tomb. In the first-century Jewish context, women were not considered reliable legal witnesses.

If the story were invented, women would not have been chosen as primary witnesses. This detail argues for authenticity rather than invention.

He is not here, for he has risen, just as he said.” — Matthew 28:6

Eyewitness Testimony and Multiple Appearances

The resurrection appearances were not private mystical experiences.

“After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive…” — 1 Corinthians 15:6

Group appearances

Private settings

Former skeptics, including James, the brother of Jesus, later became believers.

Saul of Tarsus, once a persecutor of Christians, became Paul the apostle after claiming to encounter the risen Christ.

These transformations require explanation.

“He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days.” — Acts 1:3

The Transformation of the Disciples

Before the crucifixion, the disciples were fearful and scattered.

Afterward, they publicly proclaimed the resurrection despite persecution.

People may suffer for what they believe to be true. But they do not willingly suffer for what they know to be false.

“When they saw the boldness of Peter and John… they were astonished.” — Acts 4:13

Their willingness to endure hardship strengthens the credibility of their testimony.

“We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” — Acts 4:20

Alternative Explanations Fall Short

Several theories have been proposed:

The disciples stole the body.
Jesus did not truly die.
The resurrection was a hallucination.

Each explanation struggles under scrutiny.

A stolen body does not explain the willingness of the disciples to suffer.
A swoon theory does not explain the severity of Roman crucifixion.
Hallucinations do not occur in group settings.

The simplest explanation remains the most powerful: He rose.

The Rise of the Church in Hostile Territory

Christianity did not begin in a safe environment.

It began in Jerusalem, where the events were publicly known.

If the resurrection were false, opponents could have easily discredited it at the source.

Instead, the movement grew.

“Men of Israel… this Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.” — Acts 2:22–24, 32

A Decision That Cannot Be Avoided

The resurrection is not merely a historical curiosity. It demands a response.

Either Jesus remains in the grave, or Christianity is empty. Or the tomb is empty, and Christ is Lord.

“If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless.” — 1 Corinthians 15:17
